What happens during UFE treatment?

Uterine fibroid embolization is a procedure performed by a highly trained interventional radiologist. They begin by creating a small incision in either your wrist or groin area. From there, they use x-ray guidance to move a catheter through the blood vessels that are supplying the fibroids. Once the catheter is in place, embolic material is injected into the blood vessels, cutting off the blood supply to your fibroids. The embolic material remains in the blood vessels permanently to continually shrink the fibroids. This results in shrinking the fibroids over time allowing for a full recovery. This is an outpatient procedure typically completed within an hour.

Fibroid Free is in Your Future

There are various reasons to opt for uterine fibroid embolization, from less pain to regular menstrual cycles. Some other benefits of UFE include:

  • No surgery is required; the procedure is performed as an outpatient treatment and typically completed in under an hour.
  • A heavy and irregular menstrual cycle may have been your reason for initial concern. With UFE, menstrual bleeding is reduced due to a reduction in the size of the uterus once the fibroids are diminished in size. Your menstrual cycle is more normal, and regulated and will last a typical seven days or less.
  • Decreased pain is one of the biggest reasons to opt into UFE. Fibroids cause unnecessary pain in the abdomen, lower back, and pelvis. With UFE, you can dramatically reduce pain at the source.
  • Faster recovery times and less expensive option when compared to more extensive inpatient surgeries like a standard hysterectomy.
  • Minimally invasive, involving only a tiny incision at the groin or wrist.
  • Covered by most insurance companies.
  • Preservation of the uterus which is imperative to those wishing to conceive in the future.
  • Reduced bladder pressure and frequent urination.

Risk factors associated with UFE are minimal

UFE has a success rate of over 90%. Although the risk factors for this interventional radiology procedure are low there are a few to consider.

The risk factors associated with UFE include;

  • Vaginal discharge or infection
  • Allergic reaction
  • Short-term, long-term, or permanent missed menstrual cycles.
  • Possible fibroid passage
  • Postembolization syndrome may include pain, elevated white blood cell count, fever, or fatigue
  • Embolization of other organs
